Knowledge is Power
The following are COMMON issues to be aware of when purchasing a new pup from ANYWHERE! Never feel as though your pup is the exception.
If a pet store, shelter, or breeder tells you THEIR puppies would NEVER have issues they are not being honest.
Although we do guarantee our pups health, please keep in mind the following:
Alot of stress is placed on a puppy when adopted. Leaving their moms and pens along with the move to a new home and new surroundings can lower their immune system making them susceptible to common upper respiratory issues such as Kennel Cough, as early as the moment they leave the store or breeders home. All pups are vaccinated for Kennel Cough which actually introduces the virus into their system, such as the flu shot for humans. It doesn't mean it won't be contracted, it just lessens the effect in most. Kennel Cough can last from 2 days to 6 weeks or more (average is about a week). It is an annoying hacking cough that can be frightening when heard, but often sounds worse than it is. As long as the pup eats and drinks and takes any meds (if prescribed by a vet), it will most often just run it's course. He may be tired from meds or the cough just as you would from a common cold, so allow time for him to mend. Coughing may be worse at night and after play.
Some breeds (such as Bulldogs, Pugs, Shih Tzu's, and Boston Terriers to name a few) that have the short nasal passages are more prone to respiratory infections, sometimes turning to pneumonia if not treated properly and in a timely manner. We ALWAYS point this out to the purchasing customer and inform them of the possibility. Just as we inform them about tiny statured pups and the possiblity of sugar shock (See Hypoglycemia).
Occasionally, after a pups recent move, underlying issues (only found by your vet by doing a fecal test) can be detected, such as parasites. Parasites are often passed from the mom to the pup after birth or between pups housed closely together. It does NOT mean the pup came from uncleanly or dirty surroundings. We do have parasitic prevention in our shop to reduce the risk of your pup contracting anything while in our care. Again, truth be told, it can happen anywhere.
If your pup has either of these common issues, they will be detected either by you or during their first vet visit when fecal tests and the basic exam are done. We do our best to catch and treat these buggers, but it is not realistic to catch every one. Rest assured, we would NEVER knowingly sell a pup with issues.
Please give your new pup time to settle into his surroundings. Often times they may not be very playful or energetic for the first few days of their move. A whole new world has just opened up and it can be a bit overwhelming.
Hypoglycemia (Sugar Shock):
Hypoglycemia is very common in puppies, mostly small breeds (Yorkies, Pomeranians, Chihuahua's, Shih Tzu's), and is easily managed with proper nutrients such as Nutri-Cal or Nutrient Drops. Small dogs MUST eat 3-5 times a day and drink adequate amounts of water. Often times (as soon as the day they go home from the simple car ride or new surroundings) it can happen. Some signs and syptoms to be aware of : Not eating, dehydration, staggering, vacant stare, sleeping , lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, also the gums will be very pale white or blue. Seek immediate attention! Let your vet know it could be sugar and ask for a test before ruling it out. Many vets overlook hypoglygemia and test for everything else but. Time is of the essence!
We want your pet and your family to be happy and healthy!
Thank you!!!
